30 YEARS AFTER THE DISASTER

For 30 years December 7th has remained in our memory as an evidence of pain and deep sorrow since one of the most mournful pages of our history has been stamped in every Armenian’s heart. The tragic earthquake of 1988 left an indelible imprint having taken thousands of human lives, having destroyed approximately 70 percent of housing stock of Gyumri. December 7,1988 unified not only the whole Armenian nation but also people from all over the world who arrived in Gyumri a few hours after the earthquake and jointly set to restoration and construction of the city. A rescue group comprising ANPP employees was also involved in the work. This group was in Gyumri a few hours after the disaster. 30 years later a small group consisting of the same employees left for Gyumri, visited schools №6, №31 and №10 where once they had saved a lot of children from under the ruins. Unfortunately, they failed to save some children and among them was a schoolgirl Lilit Sakoyan. The ANPP employees attended the presentation of her book of verses. In memory of the victims a wreath was laid on behalf of the ANPP management and staff and the schools were presented with souvenirs symbolizing the ANPP.

With non-cicatrized wounds but with resolute steps Gyumri is continuing to recover symbolizing the inflexible willpower of the proud residents of Gyumri and their desire to create.
