Main Functions of the Nuclear Safety and Reliability Department (NS&RD)

The Nuclear Safety and Reliability Department (NS&RD) coordinates the activities of the “HAEK” CJSC departments in ensuring nuclear safety, organizes and ensures fulfillment of the requirements of the Technical Specification and Standard and Technical Documentation related to nuclear safety, participates in the development of activities aimed at nuclear safety enhancement and in the control of their implementation.

The main functions of the NS&RD are:

  1. ensuring safe, reliable and cost-efficient operation of the reactor facility and of the whole plant jointly with other departments of the “HAEK” CJSC,
  2. performing safety analysis for the operation of the reactor facility and the whole plant,
  3. arranging and implementing reactor core refuelling activities,
  4. ensuring safe, reliable and cost-efficient use of nuclear fuel, as well as its complete accounting throughout the period of its presence at the plant area,
  5. analyzing the reliability of the safety-important systems and equipment and monitoring their condition,
  6. performing radiochemical analyses of isotopes present in the primary and secondary coolant circuits and in the auxiliary systems,
  7. performing radiochemical analyses of corrosion products present in the primary and secondary circuits and on the surface of the major equipment,
  8. cooperating with the RA Committee for Nuclear Safety Regulation on issues related to the unit start-up after outage and application of the IAEA safeguards,
  9. personnel development,
  10. paperwork,
  11. ensuring operability and integrity of rooms, offices, systems and equipment assigned to the NS&RD,
  12. fulfilling requirements of the “HAEK” CJSC plan for responding to nuclear and radiation accidents,
  13. identifying the corresponding safety class (I, II, III) of the structural component, subject to modernization, based on the influence on safety,
  14. planning the envisaged fuel handling activities.

The NS&RD includes four laboratories:

        1. laboratory of nuclear physics,

        2. laboratory of nuclear fuel,

        3. water-radiochemical laboratory,

        4. reliability laboratory.
