Main Activity of the Radiation Safety Department

The Radiation Safety Department (RSD) represents an individual organizational structure unit of the HAEK CJSC.

The RSD ensures monitoring of radiation environment and observance of radiation safety standards in the ANPP premises, at the plant site, and outside the site (survey area); monitoring of the NPP radioactive releases and effluents into environment, process fluids activity; observance of radiation safety rules by personnel, the personnel doses, operation and maintenance of all radiation monitoring systems and facilities. Also, the RSD carries out organizational and methodological activities aimed at ensuring radiation safety at the NPP and personnel dose loads reduction in compliance with ALARA principle. The RSD monitors environmental compliance in the course of the ANPP production activity, meteorological conditions at the ANPP site and in its vicinity.

The RSD consists of the following functional units:

  • Radio technical laboratory (RTL);
  • Laboratory of personal dosimetry (LPD);
  • Laboratory of environment protection (LEP);
  • Radiation safety service (RSS).

The main functions of the RTL are:

  • Maintenance and repair of complete radiometric, dosimetry, spectrometry, and electronic equipment of the department.

The main functions of the LPD are:

  • Organization and ensuring proper monitoring of exposure for the personnel working with ionizing radiation sources at the ANPP;
  • Ensuring safe and reliable operation of instrumentation and equipment of personal dosimetry;
  • Analysis of results, specifying dose loads of the ANPP personnel.

The main functions of the LEP are:

  • Monitoring of radiation environment at the ANPP site;
  • Monitoring of gamma radiation in the monitoring points of the site;
  • Monitoring of gamma radiation in the monitoring bores of reactor department and reactor service building;
  • Monitoring of radiation environment at the SFDSF area;
  • Monitoring of radionuclide content of aerosol releases from the NPP;
  • Monitoring of beta activity and radionuclide content of the plant waste water (domestic sewage, storm water sewage);
  • Measurement of internal exposure of personnel working in the restricted access area.

The main functions of the RSS are:

  • Remote monitoring of radiation environment with SYSTEMA facility in the restricted access area production premises of the ANPP main and ancillary buildings;
  • Monitoring of ionizing radiation at the working places;
  • Monitoring of gross activity of gas and aerosol releases;
  • Monitoring of observance of radiation safety rules by the NPP personnel, and also by the seconded personnel at the whole area of the ANPP;
  • Systematic recording and analysis of exposure doses of personnel working with radioactive materials and attending the areas with ionizing radiation;
  • Monitoring of observance of rules for contaminated cloths and shoes, and also for radiation hygiene;
  • Monitoring of equipment, floors, walls, and other contaminated surfaces in the restricted access area, and also monitoring of their proper decontamination;
  • Monitoring of air treatment and ventilation systems in the premises of restricted access area;
  • Monitoring of observance of radiation safety rules during transportation of radioactive waste;
  • Accounting of radioactive sources at the ANPP;
  • Control of working conditions and use of protective means while working in areas with high level of ionizing radiation or high level of radioactive materials in air;
  • Monitoring of the primary circuit coolant volumetric activity;
  • Monitoring of the secondary circuit blowdown water in order to identify integrity of the steam generator tubing;
  • Process gauging of integrity of primary circuit components.
