The crucial phase of monitoring the metal condition of the reactor vessel has started at the Armenian NPP
Following the successful completion of the reactor vessel metal annealing at the Armenian NPP, a new, strategically important phase has started: continuous monitoring and surveillance of the reactor vessel metal condition are being carried out. This process is one of the fundamental components for ensuring the safety, reliability, and long-term operation of the second power unit.
Following the annealing of the reactor vessel metal, trains of assemblies containing surveillance specimens—designed for WWER-440 type reactors—were installed inside the reactor in 2024. They were placed in specially designated locations to monitor changes in the reactor metal's properties.
Currently, the training assemblies have been withdrawn from the reactor and transferred to a specialized laboratory for detailed investigations. The results of these investigations will be used for the precise assessment of the reactor vessel metal condition and its residual life during the additional operating period.
With this phase, the Armenian NPP not only reinforces its technical safety but also affirms that the plant continues to operate in accordance with the highest international standards, proving its technological development and responsible approach toward the safe operation of nuclear energy.
