The Armenian NPP Intends to Implement its Program of Spent Nuclear Fuel Management

On 1 November, 2019 the hearings in the Parliamentary Committee on Regional and Eurasian Integration were attended also by Movses Vardanyan, «HAEK» CJSC Genera1 Director.

Addressing the issue of spent nuclear fuel management, he noted that the areas existing at the plant allow to store the spent nuclear fuel (SNF) in them. Except for the medium–level SNF, the ANPP does not have any problems related to storage. As to the medium–level SNF, in the near future the construction of the fourth set of the spent nuclear fuel dry storage facility will be started which will enable to solve this issue at least till 2036.

In these storage facilities the fuel can be stored for a minimum of 50 years and a maximum of 300 years. Nonetheless, the General Director stated that negotiations were being conducted with the Russian authorities with regard to the possibility of exporting the SNF from the Armenian NPP to the territory of the Russian Federation.
